I was in Zen at Sooka Sentral where the 2 stage of the search for the "star chef"culinary talent just took place. I have never been to Sooka so this was a good opportunity to check it out. I was one of the ‘mystery’ judges for this round where the 6 contestants were judged based on the food they have prepared plus their star qualities. What exactly are these star qualities, you say? I supposed it’s their personalities, the way they handled themselves when questions were asked about the food they have prepared, their characters etc, etc, etc..

The 6 contestants are all students from the various culinary schools in the country. Today they presented the food that they have prepared. The best part of the whole thing is we get to try the various scrumptious, delicious foods served.

I’m impressed with all these young chaps who came up with a main course and dessert each. I especially liked Alson Khor’s Pan Fried Salmon served with Garlic Beurre Blanc, which is really sedap with all the combination of garlic and tomato. Alson’s Kalamansi Cheese Cake perfected the meal.
My second favourite was Peter Pang’s Hot Pot Braised Chicken (Chicken Stew) which contained Coke as one of the ingredients served with the most crunchiest garlic bread I've tried.Hmmm…I’m definitely going to try cooking that at home.

Emil Farez’s Chilled Strawberry Cheese Cake was worth mentioning…It was light without losing the creaminess of cheese cake. Though it’s a shame that his Fish Tempura was cold when served.

Jeff Wang’s Thai Curry Chicken had all the right taste to it combined with the simple fried rice with the cheese on top…and the Banana Choc Slice on top is his...
And Trevor Pang’s Curried Couscous was unusual but a nice combi with the sambal ikan bilis. What a good idea to ganti the nasi lemak with the healthier couscous… I can eat it even without the Roasted Morrocan Chicken.

Christopher Wan Sageng’s Pineapple and Clove Mousse was delish with bits of pineapple with each bite…His Pan Fried Salmon with Mango Hollandaise Sauce will be much more sedap with MORE Hollaidaise Sauce..

Overall, I must say the food were nice, the boys were talented…they just need to brush up on their interpersonal skills and build their characters…but then again these boys are still quite young…

I thought this is a very good effort by ZEN (by Secret Recipe) . Would be a better idea to have the show on air on ntv7…Any interested sponsors????? Perhaps next year the campaign could be extended to be on-air.

I’m looking forward to the finals this 6th August…Check out http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=68280589289&ref=ts. where you can also join and vote your favorite talent and stand a chance to win some dining vouchers…I am so going there to vote!!!!
